In ons rijke landje is de grens tussen hobby- en beroepsmuzikanten vervaagd. Veel hobbymuzikanten zijn net zo goed, en regelmatig zelfs veel beter uitgerust als professionals. Met vintage gitaren, antieke microfoons, state-of-the-art versterkers en professionele apparatuur zien amateurs en soms nog geloofwaardiger uit dan hun beroeps-collega’s. Mensen in ons land hebben ook veel vrije tijd om te oefenen en zo kan ook een groep amateurs iets op de bühne zetten, wat goed klinkt en er heel professioneel uitziet. Helaas leidt deze luxe even vaak ook tot luiheid. Vermogende hobbyisten kopen zich in met mooie spullen en oefenen eenzijdige vingervaardigheid op een zolderkamer. Daarna willen zij deze ‘investering’ beloond zien. Op een muzikantenbank plaatsen zij een oproep voor een ‘draaiende’ band waarin zij kunnen ‘meeliften”. Zij zoeken een baan als bandoppositie.
Bandoppositieleden vinden dat zij experts zijn, omdat zij biografieën hebben gelezen over succesvolle bands, alle talentenshow op telvisie hebben gezien en bekende artiesten volgen op Instagram en Tiktok. Zij zijn netwerkers, die de beslommeringen van alle muzikanten in ons land kennen. De oppositie vindt dat zij rechten heeft, maar draagt geen verantwoordelijkheid. Repeteren willen ze zo weinig mogelijk, en bij een optreden komen ze liefst zo laat mogelijk aan. Soundchecken vinden zij maar vermoeiend, het is tenslotte niet hun probleem, of het geluid goed is. Hun mede-bandleden, de ‘coalitie’, moeten liefst goedbetaalde en goedbezochte optredens te regelen, waar zij kunnen shinen. Niet te ver weg, niet te vaak, maar genoeg om op de socials goed voor de dag te komen. Alles moet daarvoor goed geregeld zijn, om stress te vermijden.
Zoals dat de oppositie betaamd, zijn haar leden ongeduldig, snappen zij niet waarom de coalitie altijd zo moeilijk doet en waar de resultaten blijven. De oppositie geeft haar mening, maar laat acties over aan de coalitie. Maar de coalitie heeft dus niet de leiding; Bij beslissingen stemt de oppositie mee, bij tegenvallende resultaten is de coalitie verantwoordelijk. Enkel wanneer de bandcoalitie de handdoek in de ring dreigt te gooien, komt de oppositie in beweging. Want als de coalitie zou klappen, zou zij het voortaan zelf moeten regelen of dreigt er gezichtsverlies. Met de tijdelijke steun van de oppositie komt het dan meestal toch weer goed, en daar kan zij zich dan ook altijd nog weer op beroepen.
In een poging om professioneel voor de dag te komen, gedragen veel amateurs zich soms helaas juist onprofessioneel. Ik ken de professionele entertainmentbranche van binnenuit als een wereld waarin iedereen voor elkaar klaar staat, het grotere geheel ziet en de beleving van het publiek altijd voorop heeft staan. Project managers, constructeurs, technici, horecapersoneel, regisseurs, backoffice enz., iedereen heeft een aandeel en stapt daar graag ook nog overheen, wanneer dat nodig is. Teamwork is hier de succesfactor. Geen oppositie voeren, maar handen uit de mouwen en iets moois neerzetten. Onze welvaart geeft ons mogelijkheden, maar leidt helaas vaak tot luiheid en oppositie voeren. Als we daaroverheen stappen en gezamenlijk aanpakken, zouden we zoveel meer bereiken.

THE OPPOSITION
In our rich little country, the line between hobby and professional musicians is blurred. Many hobby musicians are just as good, and regularly much better equipped, as professionals. With vintage guitars, antique microphones, state-of-the-art amplifiers and professional equipment, amateurs look and sometimes look even more credible than their professional colleagues. People in our country also have a lot of free time to practice, and so even a group of amateurs can put something on stage that sounds good and looks very professional. Unfortunately, this luxury just as often also leads to laziness. Wealthy hobbyists buy in with fancy gear and practice one-sided finger skills in an attic room. Then they want to see this “investment” rewarded. On a musician bank, they place a call for a “rotating” band in which they can “hitch a ride. They are looking for a job as a band opposition.
Band-opposition members think they are experts because they have read biographies about successful bands, watched all the talent shows on television and follow famous artists on Instagram and Tiktok. They are networkers, who know the worries of all the musicians in our country. The opposition thinks it has rights, but bears no responsibility. Rehearsing they want as little as possible, and at gigs they prefer to arrive as late as possible. They find sound-checking tiresome; after all, it is not their problem, whether the sound is good. Their fellow band members, the “coalition,” should preferably arrange well-paid and well-attended gigs, where they can shine. Not too far away, not too often, but enough to make a good impression on socials. Everything must be well arranged for that, to avoid stress.
As befits the opposition, its members are impatient, do not understand why the coalition is always so difficult and where the results remain. The opposition gives its opinion, but leaves actions to the coalition. But the coalition is thus not in charge; When decisions are made, the opposition votes along, when results are disappointing, the coalition is responsible. Only when the band coalition threatens to throw in the towel does the opposition move. Because if the coalition were to fold, it would have to take care of it itself from now on or risk losing face. Then, with the temporary support of the opposition, things usually work out anyway, and it can always invoke that again.
Unfortunately, in an effort to appear professional, many amateurs sometimes behave precisely unprofessionally. I know the professional entertainment industry from the inside out as a world where everyone is there for each other, sees the bigger picture and always has the audience’s experience at the forefront. Project managers, constructors, technicians, catering staff, directors, back office, etc., everyone has a part to play and gladly steps over it when necessary. Teamwork is the success factor here. No opposition, just roll up your sleeves and create something beautiful. Our prosperity gives us opportunities, but unfortunately often leads to laziness and opposition. If we get over that and tackle things together, we would achieve so much more.
